PURPOSE

Too much enterprise software still feels like it was engineered by engineers, for engineers. Designing highly functional, spatial, and human interfaces to bridge that gap is my driver.

Engine Immobilizer

Remote immobilization for fleet managers responding to vehicle theft.

The Challenge

I joined Motive in Q3 2023, right as plans to expand into Mexico were already in motion. Sales Engineers on the ground told us that 90% of prospects wanted remote immobilization. We had already lost one significant prospect because we did not have it. This was the only core requirement missing from our product offering. We backtracked on our priorities and had the rest of Q4 to figure it out for a Q1 2024 launch. Hardware, Tracking, and Platform all had to move together.

The Constraints

Admin was moving from 1.0 to 2.0. The Vehicles page had been designed for 2.0 but never built, while the 1.0 version kept collecting one-off additions. I had to strip the page down, rebuild its hierarchy, and add Engine Immobilizer without creating work that would be thrown away a few months later. Fleet View's maps, icons, and historical tracking were also changing. Device Hub was still only a plan. We could not build the hardware in-house, so Motive sourced a third-party device for the first time.

Field Insights & Synthesis

The control belonged to fleet managers. A vehicle was immobilized about five times per month, mostly after attempted robbery or drunk driving. The request usually began with a panic button or a call from the driver. Fleet managers also warned that thieves cut device wiring and that dead zones made remote commands unreliable. I tried five placements before choosing a banner under the tabs. It would appear for less than 1% of vehicles at a time, so if it was any quieter, it would be easy to miss.

The Deliverables & Output

We shipped a persistent status banner, live location and video, follow mode, trip timeline events, and alerts for device removal and signal jamming. The product gave Sales the last core capability they needed for Mexico and added $8M to Motive's ARR. This was Motive's first third-party hardware product and my first project at the company.

The Challenge

As our team at Educative scaled from 50 people to more than 600, a centralized repository for projects, communication, and documentation became necessary. The existing tools solved separate parts of the problem, requiring a lot of context switching and maintenance. To solve this for multiple personas across the company, we set out to build Workflows.

My Role

By this point, I had been at Educative for over two years. It was an ambitious product that our leadership was heavily focused on, and I worked directly with sales, engineering, and product leadership on the end-to-end process. I was also involved in hiring and developing an outcome-focused team of designers and illustrators.

User Research & Architecture

I spoke to 31 people, including 18 Engineering Managers and 13 Software Engineers, sourced through my LinkedIn network. Twenty-four used Jira and Confluence as a pair. At Educative, PMs split work between Monday and Slite, then manually linked records and updated both statuses. After synthesizing the findings, I took a weekend to prototype Projects Home, Project Details, and the Document page.

The Outcome

Sales used a prototype built from these designs during an enterprise pitch. The work helped Educative close a $100K deal.
